Reporting to the President, the Director of Communications develops, plans, and executes a communication strategy that enhances ACLS s mission to advance humanistic scholarship through its fellowship and grant programs, research projects, and its relationships with donors, fellows, higher education partners, and member societies. Responsibilities will encompass a broad range of communications activities, beginning with the creation of a communications plan aligned with the ACLS strategic planning process now underway. Subsequent operational responsibilities will include managing ACLS s social media and digital presence, developing communications plans for events and special projects, connecting ACLS s programmatic efforts to greater civic engagements and trends, and ensuring that ACLS s communications promote a positive, inclusive, engaged, and consistent public brand and voice.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

In consultation with the President and key staff members, leads and executes a comprehensive long-term communications strategy that is coherent, encompasses ACLS s core activities and aligns with its strategic plan;
Set the agenda for ACLS s social media presence on various platforms; create and implement protocols for sharing content that aligns with institutional goals and increases engagement and visibility;
Collaborate with staff to develop, select, and edit communications to advance fellowship program goals or to serve various ACLS member constituencies;
Create efficient workflows for program related external communications and manage coordination with internal team, including communications support for program applicants and participants;
Work with the President, key staff members and ACLS s external constituencies to create and shape public content on the annual calendar of print, digital, and social publications;
Oversee production and distribution of both digital and paper communications collateral, including press releases, program announcements, newsletters, donor and recipient resources, videos, and marketing material;
Create a protocol and timetable for a digital publication highlighting news of ACLS and the work of its fellows to be distributed to fellows, donors, and other friends of ACLS;
Evaluate current print publications (annual report, Haskins lectures) for content/design, distribution, staff responsibility, and effectiveness in communicating and promoting ACLS s mission;
Create and launch campaigns to advance effective philanthropy, including print, digital, and social media campaigns, providing information on gift levels, campaign news and priorities;
Attend regular meetings with ACLS senior staff to continuously evaluate and design marketing strategies for ACLS supported programs, publications, and initiatives;
Research best practices and trends to compile, track, and disseminate analytics/reporting for communications initiatives including, but not limited to: attendance at events, impressions and click throughs of social media, readership and subscriptions to print material;
Develop response strategies to funders requesting their publicity about ACLS activities;
Collaborate with Digital and Information Technology on web functionality, content, and appearance;
Assist with strategy, logistics, preparation and tracking of ACLS events, meetings, and conferences

Qualifications:

Bachelor s degree
At least 7 years of progressive experience in communications and marketing or related field, including developing proactive strategies to engage target audiences
Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills
Proficiency in MS Office Suite required, experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus
Experience with web content management and social media
Experience working with a CRM and marketing automation tools strongly preferred
Ability to coordinate simultaneous, multiple projects
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with internal and external audiences
Commitment to ACLS s work and mission
Prior experience in higher education, the humanities, culture, philanthropy or nonprofit sector highly desirable
